AutoTerminal International, through its affiliate, AutoTerminal America is authorized and licensed by the Federal Maritime Commission as an Ocean Transport Intermediary (OTI). This recognizes that we are BOTH a Freight Forwarder AND an NVOCC equipped with all the necessary capabilities and requirements strictly stipulated by the Federal Government of the United States. This gives us the ability to service our customers in routes to and from the United States.
NVOCC stands for Non-vessel operating common carrier. NVOCCs are one type of sea freight forwarders that operate as transportation or logistics intermediaries. The Federal Maritime Commission regulates and licenses NVOCCs that operate to or from a port in the United States.
NVOCCs are required to file a surety bond and maintain tariffs for their rates and charges. NVOCCs may handle full container loads (FCL), less-than-container loads (LCL) and consolidations, which are then tendered to the ocean carrier. They are required to issue bills of lading to the shipper, and are liable to the shipper for loss or damage of any cargo in transit.
In countries other than the US, there is usually no distinction between an NVOCC and a forwarder. As both an NVOCC and a forwarder, AutoTerminal International handles all these services.
